 General audience
Issues to be addressed- The problem impacts 166 K-12th graders (in Silver Schools). Largest # are in transitional. They lack a stable home. Multiple needs-medical clothing food school supplies. Children as young as 15 on their own. Half of the 6th Street students meet the school's definition of homeless. Large cultural diversity among homeless. Substance abuse among parents is a major impact in many kid's being homeless, especially meth. Many have parents in prison. Grandparents provide care. Deming has a little less than 200 homeless students. Albuquerque has 2000 students classified as homeless.
Video on Homeless Youth & grant potentials - Susan Wilger discussed the problem of homelessness on a line bar classifying it as: Prevention (affordable housing), Emergency/Crisis (job loss, surgery, eviction, sudden rise in rent), Transitional housing (from 30 days to 18 months, some cases 2 yrs) and Permanent.
Bringing it all together
Who needs to be involved to make an impact on this issue?
What gaps exist? Middle School Boys can't go to El Refugio in Domestic Violence cases. Too young for SWAK. Some homeless youth refuse foster care/CYFD linkages? Suggestion of child care/ homeless scholarships that could be avaialbe to pay for children >5 years old who don't qualify for school-age program for homeless children. Teens loss benefits at 18 years old, can lead them right back to homelessness. Grandparents in senior housing can't take kids and the custody issues and documentation issues that grandparents/extended family face.
What are the issues now? Prioritize!
 Transitional housing
 Affordable housing
 Culturally sensitive response
 Aid/education for grandparents
Network, collaborate, take it on!
Two work groups were formed: one lead by Susan Wilger to address transitional housing and affordable housing. Alice Jones will lead a team on cultural sensitivity and legal issues grandparents extended/family face. Both will report at the next IAA meeting.
Back to IAA regular format for June
Next Meeting: Thursday, June 15, 2006 at 8:30 a.m. at Silver Consolidated School's Administrative office board room, Swan st.
