II. Roundtable topic procedures --- Gelb introduced the topic of Meth and what has occurred in the community since the Town Halls on the issue two years ago.
III. Roundtable discussion on METH
· Framing the issue - Mr. Jim Helgart - BAMH- reported that most meth use began as early as 14 or 15 in self-reported YRRS data. Meth is easy to access and easy to hide the associated paraphernalia. He said the major focus of the Senator Pearce's town hall was on the need for treatment centers in the state-especially ones for women with young children. He said data has shown that meth users are predominately Caucasian with a high rate of females. Females are seeking treatment more than males in the area. His program has treated 90 families in the last 2 ½ years. He reported high rates of violence and neglect in the families that are using meth. Once treatment given he said those treated showed drastic increase in parenting and care skills. He discussed Meth Watch, which helps track items associated with meth manufacturing by local businesses.
· Other speakers- Susan Wilger of BAMHS discussed her agencies collection of prevalence data in the region for Meth use. According to the YRRS 2003 Meth use in youth was reported at 13.9% for NM State, Grant County has a 15.1% reported use, higher than the state. A quarter of Yucca Lodge (the local detoxification/treatment center) admissions were for meth and stimulate use. Wilger reported that most of the people seeking treatment at BAMHS for meth were of lower socio-economic status; she said higher and middle socio-economic people seek treatment out-of-state or at private treatment centers not in the area.
IV. Back to IAA regular format for September--No date set until new facilitator found!
V. October (to be announced) topic will be Grand-parenting! - No date set until new facilitator found!
